Editors Chat: Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas’ Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter Campaign Controversy

As you've likely heard, Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas' Veronica Mars movie campaign broke Kickstarter records yesterday by making the entire $2 million dollar goal in just ten hours. Fans of the series came out in droves to support the project, and have continued to do so. They are nearing the $3 million dollar mark on day two. While many have been excited by the opportunity to participate and support the oft-discussed and long delayed film's production, others have mixed to outright negative feelings about the use of Kickstarter. A social media backlash against the campaign's rapid success quickly emerged to compete with the enthusiastic fan response.

Why Veronica Mars Rules

Some say that this is Kickstarter - which was designed to help fund independent projects - selling out. The concern is that the little guy will now be lost and the heavy-hitters will co-opt the outlet. Many say this is a cop-out on Warner Bros. part (who they feel will now profit from the contributions of regular people). Others feel that it's an insult for successful celebrities like Bell to ask for money for their projects, saying, "why can't they just pay for it themselves?" All kinds of questions and concerns have emerged surrounding what is the fruition of a long-awaited dream for Veronica Mars lovers.

IGN editors Eric Goldman, Scott Collura and Roth Cornet got together to discuss the debate and give their take on the pros and cons of it all. Take a look and let us know what you think of the V Mars Kickstarter controversy - are you for, against or a little of both?
