Hey, comic book world. These are the books I'm super excited for this week. We probably have different opinions, which is why this is the perfect opportunity for you to cruise it on over to the comments and strike up a healthy discussion about this week's most exciting books!
If you want a comprehensive list of everything that’s coming out this week and not just my own picks for what’s hot, check out Diamond’s shipping list.
By Peter Tomasi & Patrick Gleason | DC
Since Greg Capullo is taking this month off, I figured I’d give a little more love to the superb Batman and Robin, which will be tackling a Requiem issue in the wake of Damian’s unfortunate death. Tomasi has done superb work with Damian, so I’m banking on his farewell issue to be the most impactful. Plus, it’s a completely silent issue – no dialogue or sound effects or anything – so Gleason will get a chance to really shine.
I’m also fully embracing myself for some heartbreak concerning Titus, Damian’s loyal canine companion. Shades of Superman #712 all over again…
By Brian Bendis & Bryan Hitch | Marvel
After a quite enjoyable first issue, Marvel’s latest big event series is in full swing. Mostly because it wasted no time in getting into the thick of it, foregoing any sort of plodding setup in favor of skipping ahead to an Ultron-ruled wasteland with Hawkeye shootin’ arrows through dudes.
I’ll admit to being shocked that the next issue was hitting so soon, but after how much I enjoyed the first, I’m okay with it. It’s kind of thrilling to ponder what character will debut a broken/hardened incarnation in this issue. Here’s hoping for a one-eyed and bearded Luke Cage.
By Paul Cornell & Alan Davis | Marvel
For a long time, I maintained that I was not a Wolverine fan. Alas, I can no longer say such a thing. With such stellar appearances in books like Uncanny X-Force, Wolverine and the X-Men, All-New X-Men, and more, I enjoy Logan more than I ever have. But his latest ongoing series – once again titled simply Wolverine – is attractive to me not because of the character, but the creative team.
Paul Cornell and Alan Davis could be doing any Marvel character and my purchase would be guaranteed. Here’s hoping that these creators can live up to the impossibly high expectations I’ve unfairly placed upon them.
By Paul Scheer, Nick Giovannetti & Manuel Bracchi | BOOM! Studios
If you missed my interview with Paul Scheer and Nick Giovannetti from earlier today, Aliens vs. Parker is basically their take on a genre homage film cut from the same cloth as Shaun of the Dead, except with sci-fi; using the tropes to write a love letter to the genre while also spoofing it in some ways. Plus, I’m a fan of Scheer’s writing work in television, so hopefully some of his wit and dialogue skills are able to make the transition to comic books.
I do wish BOOM! was offering their usual $1 first issue deal with this issue, but as it’s only a four issue mini-series, I can manage.
By Nate Cosby & Evan Shaner | Dark Horse
Maybe it’s just my thirst for more buddy cop dynamics after so recently burning through the underrated The Good Guys, or maybe it’s my love of Nate Cosby’s fantastic Cow Boy, but either way, I’m pumped for Buddy Cops. It’s a one-shot tale about a space cop and an android forced to work together to take out the bad guys! Classic!
Quirky and beautiful, Buddy Cops is a must-grab.
