Veronica Mars: Kristen Bell Helps Launch Kickstarter Campaign to Make the Movie Happen

Rejoice, Veronica Mars fans, that long talked about movie version is finally looking like a reality… You just need to help pay for it!

Kristen Bell, who played the title role, series creator Rob Thomas and the rest of the cast have said for years they’d love to make a movie version of the cult TV series, which ran for three years. The big hurdle was convincing Warner Bros., who own Veronica Mars, to put up the cash. With WB not believing there was enough of an audience there to invest in a larger scale Mars movie on a studio level and the marketing that would go with it, Bell and Thomas have turned to Kickstarter, hoping to raise $2 million in 30 days for a low budget movie about the young private eye. If that production cost can be met, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has agreed to put the movie into production and will pay for the marketing, promotion, and distribution.

EW.com reported the news, revealing the plan is to shoot the Veronica Mars movie this summer. It would then be relased in a limited run theatrical window in early 2014 and then movie to VOD, iTunes and other digital platforms. But the movie will only happen if they reach that goal…

Thomas is optimistic they can not only reach that goal, but surpass it, putting more money into the movie. He tells EW that when it comes to the amount he hopes to reach, “I’m afraid to say it out loud.”

Bell and Thomas tell EW this was the only way a movie was going to happen and they are offering a wide array of rewards for those who contribute to the Kickstarter campaign, beginning with $10.00, which wil get you updates during production and a copy of the script on the day of release. Those who give $10,000 will score a speaking role in the movie, with a ton of other rewards for the amounts in-between.

Bell tells EW she hasn’t been able to let Veronica go, saying, “I have never fallen so deeply in love with a character. We all became so close, and the cancellation of the show left a huge hole in my heart. I would have put on Veronica Mars: The Circus to bring it back.”
