Count me among the folks who did not see the ending of this issue coming. There's no twist, or major upheaval or anything like that. Instead, Wonder Woman #18 concludes rather pleasantly. The last panel is kinda adorable, which is exactly the opposite of what I expect in a DC comic these days. When it comes to quality, character, and story, few DC titles are as consistent as Wonder Woman. This is a comic series that you should supporting.
Brian Azzarello has built one hell of a world here. Yes, the larger, grander story he has been developing since issue #1 is still continuing, but there is an ending, of sorts, here. This issue feels like the season finale of a great television series, giving you just the right amount of closure while still managing to leave a few threads hanging. Not to harp on that last panel, but it really does a fantastic job of showcasing what makes this series so great. Let's face it, Wonder Woman features, quite possibly, the best supporting cast in comics right now.
When it comes to the art, there are four (four!) artists credited this month. In other books, multiple artist jamming into a single issue can really screw with the flow and feel, but here, in Wonder Woman #18, it works. Goran Sudzuka, Cliff Chiang, Tony Akins and Dan Green manage, against all odds, to produce a cohesive comic book experience. In fact, until I got to the credit page, I didn't even realize multiple artists were at work here.
Colorist Matthew Wilson deserves applause of helping hold the thing together, too. It'd be nice if a single artist could have produced this issue, but these four do a solid job in the face of what could have been a complete mess.
