Soulja Boy and Newt Gingrich might not have much in common but they will both be among the first crop of people to use Google Glass, according to a report compiled by Stanford computer science Ph.D candidate Andrej Karpathy. Karpathy assembled a list of public notices sent to winners by @projectglass and unsurprisingly, it features a fair number of celebrities including Neil Patrick Harris, Cliff Bleszinksi, Alyssa Milano, Kevin Smith, and LeVar Burton, the last of whom deserves a special shout-out for his #ifihadglass tweet: "#ifihadglass It would be a downgrade. -Geordi La Forge."
Getting Google Glass into the hands of highly visible public figures is a smart marketing move on Google's part as trends don't tend to pick up speed until they're adopted by celebrities. Household name or not, the size of a candidate's sphere of influence was taken into account when Google made its new and improved selections for early Glass owners. Be that as it may, the common man was not forgotten in Google's efforts. According to Karpathy's report, only 7 percent of those contacted by @projectglass boast more than 10,000 Twitter followers, with 61 percent having fewer than 1,000 and 26 percent having fewer than 100.
Karpathy also created a word cloud of commonly used phrases among both winners and applicants to the #ifihadlgass contest. The winners' cloud indicates a preference for creative projects, entrepreneurial endeavors, and ideas with a focus on new medias and technology. After their earlier debacle with randomly selected winners, Google seems to be placing a greater emphasis on building a smart campaign for the early rollout of Glass in its round two picks.
If Melissa Grey had Glass, she'd probably be even less productive than she is now. She can be found on MyIGN at MelissaGrey or lurking on Twitter @meligrey.
