Last month, we brought you word of what GameStop’s computers said about Tales of Xillia’s release date, and today, Namco Bandai has confirmed an official release date that was about a month off from GameStop's prediction
Gematsu reports that Tales of Xillia will launch on August 6th Stateside, exclusively for PlayStation 3. It’s unclear what the publisher’s plan is for its internally-developed RPG in Europe.
Sadly, Gematsu also points to a Kotaku article that seems to verify the worst concerning the possibility of the Tales games on Vita coming to the west. Tales of Innocence R and Tales of Hearts R are both Vita-centric remakes of Nintendo DS Tales games, and fans have been wondering if they’ll ever be localized.
Hideo Baba, the producer and director of the Tales series, had a very candid answer when asked about those games coming west. The short answer? Vita is selling badly here:
"Unfortunately, at this present time we don't have any plans to release any of the Vita titles [in the west]. One of the main reasons is, unfortunately the PlayStation Vita is doing relatively poorly in North America, so it's one of those things that if the numbers increased considerably, then it's something we could consider."
The good news is that Tales of Xillia was released in 2011 in Japan and will have taken nearly two years to arrive in North America by the time August rolls around. It’s an old-school style wait RPG fans from the ‘80s and ‘90s are plenty familiar with, and could signal that, if Vita sales ever improve, they could be released later. Plus, there’s always Tales of Xillia 2 to worry about, Xillia’s PS3-exclusive sequel that was released in Japan in 2012. Hopefully that, too, will eventually be localized for western consumption.
