Benedict Cumberbatch Joins Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak

Benedict Cumberbatch, who's about to hit the final frontier in Star Trek Into Darkness, will next climb the Crimson Peak for Guillermo del Toro.

Variety reports that del Toro has set Cumberbatch to star in the haunted house flick for Legendary Pictures. Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam have already joined the cast.

Little is known about the story of Crimson Peak. Del Toro, who is directing the film, is currently rewriting the script with Lucinda Coxon (he and Matthew Robbins wrote the original draft). But I'll be damned if Cumberbatch doesn't seem like the perfect proper British dude who'd find himself in a haunted house in one of those 1970s chillers that so inspired GDT.

One can't help but wonder if Crimson Peak will be the scratch for the haunted house itch that del Toro exhibited when he and Disney announced a Haunted Mansion remake a few years back at Comic-Con. That project would seem to have long since stalled.

Production is set to start for February, 2014, on Crimson Peak.
